Canadians sail in for PD Ports

first_imgUnder the terms of the recapitalisation, – which is subject to shareholder agreement – Toronto-based Brookfield Asset Management will buy 100 percent of BBI’s interest in PD Ports and repay GBP100m on behalf of the Teesport operator. In local media PD Ports is quoted as saying that it would welcome any deal that secured its long-term future, which will include increasing container capacity and gaining a foothold in the wind-farm market. Group development director Martyn Pellew is reported to have said: “It would be useful and helpful to have a more secure future. Talks about a potential sale of the business has had an unsettling effect on existing customers and prospects for business.”Earlier this year, BBI sold a 40 percent stake in Luxembourg-based Euroports. The proceeds from the recapitalisation will be used to repay BBI’s debt and simplify its capital structure and BBI said that it will change its name to Prime Infrastructure.last_img read more

Jail for claims director who faked boys’ medical reports

first_imgA director of a claims management company has been jailed after pursuing claims on behalf of a group of teenagers without their knowledge.Samir Kahn, also known as Waheed Rafiq (pictured), sent bogus documentation to a law firm in support of claims on behalf of a group of 15-year-olds who had been in a low-impact collision with a police car.The boys, passengers in a taxi, had given their personal details to Worcester-based CMC Sylla Accident Management & Solutions after the collision in June 2011.Insurer Travelers paid £24,359 in cheques after a successful pursuit of four claims using medical reports and parental consent forms. But an investigation by the City of London Police’s insurance fraud enforcement department (IFED) found that the boys’ parents had contacted the solicitors stating they had not been instructed to pursue any claims and the parents did not wish to because their children were not injured. It transpired that Kahn had sent fake medical reports and two parent identity forms, one in each of his names, purporting to be legal guardian of two of the boys. This resulted in the money being paid to Kahn and two of his family members.Kahn, 44, pleaded guilty to money laundering and was sentenced to 12 months in jail at Worcester Crown Court earlier this month.IFED has also applied to the court to confiscate the proceeds of Kahn’s crime.Detective sergeant Matt Hussey, whose team led the investigation, said: ‘Kahn used the schoolboys’ collision to gain money he was not entitled to from an insurer. The fact the collision was with a police car shows the confidence Kahn had that he would not be caught.’last_img read more

Railway industry news in brief – May 2015

first_imgThe national railways of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran have signed a protocol covering plans for an express transit container service which would link China with Turkey and potentially Pakistan, India and the Gulf states via Bandar Abbas. Shipments of grain from Russia and Kazakhstan to Iran and ferrous metals from Kazakhstan to Iran are also planned. On April 1 SKM w Trójmiescie opened a 1·1 km extension to Gdansk Sródmiescie. The 80m zloty project included rebuilding a terminating platform at Gdansk Glówny as a through platform and providing a double-track alignment to the new station. The platforms are 200 m long and 960 mm high. Head-to-head competition came to the 455 km Stockholm – Göteborg corridor on March 21 when open access operator MTR Express launched commercial services. Initially operating around 50 trains per week, rising to 90 from August, MTR Express is offering an end-to-end journey time of 3 h 19 min with three intermediate station calls. Brazilian freight operator VLI has begun a 10-year contract to move manganese ore for Mineração Buritirama from its processing plant in Marabá to the port of Itaqui. Shipments expected to total 500 000 tonnes a year are moved in 50-wagon trains on the Carajás Railway, under a track access contract between VLI and Vale. RFI, the Piemonte region and SNCF Réseau have signed an agreement to finance the first phase of modernisation of the 47 km section of the Ventimiglia – Cuneo route which lies in French territory. The Italian government and Piemonte are providing €29m for the programme, which includes the installation of a train protection system as well improvements to the bridges and tunnels.last_img read more
