England captain Steven Gerrard set to stay at Liverpool

first_imgLiverpool captain Steven Gerrard has given the strongest indication yet that he will remain at Anfield as he welcomed the signing of Joe Cole. There has been speculation over the Reds midfielder’s future this summer but after meeting new boss Roy Hodgson, Gerrard now appears set to stay.“I wanted the chance to meet Roy Hodgson privately,” the 30-year-old told the club website.“Having done so I’m very impressed with his plans for the future of the team.”He added: “I only returned to training on Monday at Melwood with some of the other World Cup players but I can’t wait for the new season to start.”Gerrard has been linked with a move to Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid during a summer in which he endured a disappointing World Cup campaign with England in South Africa. The fact he has broken his silence about his future will go some way to reassuring Liverpool fans of his future plans, and he explained: “I made it clear thant I simply needed to concentrate on the World Cup and then have a decent holiday with my family.”New Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson greeted Gerrard’s apparent pledge with understandable delight, saying: “It’s a great piece of news. There won’t be anyone in Liverpool today who isn’t delighted to hear that.“I’m really pleased about it because I’ve got great respect for Steven Gerrard. He’s a player who I was really looking forward to working with when I came to Liverpool.“It seems now with that commitment that this will happen. It gives everyone a boost without question.“It will be a tough season, with a lot of matches and the disappointment of last season is going to take a while to dissipate, but it is very good that our best player is still going to be playing at this club. “Hopefully with the signing of Joe Cole – and if we are lucky one or two others, to boost the squad – we will be going into this season’s competition, maybe stronger on paper than we were last season.”Gerrard, along with Jamie Carragher and Glen Johnson, returned to training on Monday as they started their pre-season preparations after three weeks off following England’s exit from the World Cup.England tamely went out at the last-16 stage after a 4-1 thrashing by Germany but Gerrard and Carragher did use the opportunity of being on international duty with Cole to persuade him to come to Anfield. The Reds beat Tottenham to the free transfer of the 28-year-old attacking midfielder, who left Chelsea in June.Hodgson also told TalkSport: “Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard did a good job in selling the club to Joe at the World Cup. “He was undecided about what he wanted to do and to be fair it takes a bit more selling to persuade a Londoner who has played all his life in London to move up to Liverpool.“The simple solution would have been to stay in the London area.”Cole, who played 18 minutes against Slovenia and 27 minutes in the defeat by Germany during the World Cup, has travelled to Switzerland to undergo a medical at Liverpool’s pre-season training camp after agreeing terms on a four-year deal .Gerrard said: “It’s a great signing for us. I know Joe well through the England set-up and have seen first hand just how good a player he is.“He’s proved his ability over many years in the Premier League, sometimes against us – so it will be fantastic to play alongside him in a red shirt for Liverpool. “I’ve told him what a great club this is and I’m sure Joe’s the sort of exciting talent our fans will love to see.”Liverpool defender Carragher believes Cole’s arrival at Anfield delivers a statement of intent.“It’s great news and it is a message that Liverpool mean business,” Carragher told the club website.“We have signed a top international player who has been really important for Chelsea.“A lot of clubs wanted to sign him but it is a real coup that he has chosen to come here and you have got to give the manager and the board a pat on the back for convincing him to come here. “Every supporter that I have spoken to is absolutely delighted and all the players are the same – it’s given everyone a boost, just at the right time.”Carragher believes Cole’s arrival is the kind of fillip the club needed after disappointingly finishing seventh in the Premier League last season and failing to qualify for the Champions League.“It has been a long summer and we have been in a transitional period but now the World Cup is out of the way, we can start to look forward again,” stated Carragher.“Joe is a player who has the ability to get supporters off their seats and I’ve no doubt he will do that here.“It’s good news again and, hopefully, there will be more to come. It’s the kind of signing that we needed to make. “Joe is someone I have known for a long time from playing with England. He is a great lad to have around the squad, he mixes well and is a lively character – he’s also an outstanding footballer.“In the modern game, you need forwards that can function in two or three different positions and Joe will do that, no problem at all. He can play on the right, through the middle or on the left.”Meanwhile, Hodgson hopes Cole’s impact will buoy the club’s fans as well as players.“I am pleased to get the player because it is very important to try to improve our squad as much as we can in order to reach the high goals we have set ourselves,” said Hodgson.“It is also pleasing the reaction of the fans has been as positive as our reaction, so at the moment that is perfect.“Now it is up to Joe to show on the field he is the right man.”Credit: BBClast_img read more

Paintsil denies Fulham exit

first_imgGhana and Fulham defender John Pantsil has put an end to rumours linking him with a move to Premier League new-boys West Bromwich Albion. The Ghanaian has been heavily linked with a Craven Cottage exit this summer, but he insists that the English media have their facts wrong.“I don’t know anything about that report and I am fully concentrating on Fulham with the season just about to start,” Pantsil said.“Coach Mark Hughes has not even met the playing body yet so it is impossible that such conclusions have been made.“Journalists must cross check facts before coming out with such stories because it is causing a lot of discomfort.”Fulham players and fans are only just getting to grips with new manager Mark Hughes, who has taken over the Cottagers following Roy Hodgson’s exit to Liverpool. The former Fulham boss had high praise for Hughes upon his appointment, saying: “It is a good appointment. I am very pleased for him and Fulham Football Club.“I think Mark is a very good manager and he has proved his worth many times. It is good Fulham have got such an experienced man to take over. “I think he will enjoy working at Fulham because it is a fantastic club with fantastic people and magnificent players. I wish him well, but not too well when he plays against us – but I know he will do well.”Fulham’s season begins in less than a fortnight with an away trip to the Reebok Stadium to square off against Bolton.Source: www.premiershiptalk.comlast_img read more

Ashgold writes to CAF for assurance

first_imgObuasi Ashantigold FC has written to the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) seeking assurance over their safety as the team readies for their CAF Confederation Cup match against Ivorian side, Sewe Sports de San Pedro later this month.Kudjoe Fianoo, Chief Executive of Ashgold told the GNA Sports the letter sent to CAF through the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is dictated by the recent unrest in the neighboring country after their national elections.Ashgold are slated to travel to San Pedro, located in the southwestern city of Cote d’Ivoire on the weekend of 28-30 January, 2011 for the first leg before hosting their opponents on the weekend of 11-13 February, 2011 at the Len Clay Sports Stadium, Obuasi, the mining town in the Ashanti Region. He said “it is crucial for us to get the necessary assurances from CAF because we all know what the Ivorian situation looks like right now and we do not want what happened to the Togo national team in Angola to be revisited on us before we take precautions.“We are all set in terms of preparations and waiting for CAF to give us the go ahead or other wise to see how our campaign will go.”The winner of the Ashantigold/Sewe Sports clash will face the 2007 African champions, Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia at the round of 32 and the Chief Executive insists his charges have their work well cut out to succeed in the competition. “In terms of experience, we seem to be at a disadvantage but we have a good team and very capable of travelling all the way. The Sahel challenge will be tough but we have strengthened the squad with the arrival of on loan Sadat Karim from Chelsea, Aka Michel Wisdow Salomon from Benin, Paul Kwabla Tornyo from El Sadd Club and Kande Alimamy from Cote d’Ivoire.“Karim who is on loan from Chelsea and Aka Michel from Benin have been recruited for the senior side. The other two are for the reserved side but of course their performance could always aid their promotion into the first team.”Ashgold, runners-up in the Ghana Premier League last season, will participate in the second tier continental Club championship after Ghana slipped out of the top 12 leagues’ rankings taking into consideration past performances. The Miners, runners-up in the maiden edition of the CAF Champions League in 1997, have failed to replicate their sterling performances from the late 1990’s.Source: GNAlast_img read more

Official rules provided by the event organiser must be posted on the sanctioning body’s website, and Nevada licensees must notify the Enforcement Division of its intent to accept bets. Sepp Blatter denies Fifa is in crisis

first_imgSepp Blatter has insisted that Fifa is not in crisis, despite the “great damage” done to its image by ongoing corruption allegations.“Football is not in a crisis, only some difficulties,” said the Fifa president.Blatter brushed off suggestions, from the British government among others, that Wednesday’s presidential election – for which he is the only candidate – should be suspended.“If governments try to intervene then something is wrong,” he said.“I think Fifa is strong enough that we can deal with our problems inside Fifa.”Blatter, unusually appearing alone at a news conference in Zurich, gave a defiant display despite the storm surrounding the organisation. But he ended the news conference in an angry exchange with a German reporter and talked of his time working as a journalist, complaining about a lack of “respect” from some members of the media, warning them: “We are not in a bazaar; we are in Fifa’s house.”The 75-year-old Blatter insisted that a Football Association inquiry by barrister James Dingemans QC looking into ex-FA and bid chairman Lord Triesman’s claims of alleged Fifa impropriety had “found no elements” which would prompt the world governing to investigate further. This despite Dingemans’ report revealing that Fifa executive committee Nicolas Leoz’s aide had asked for the FA Cup to be named after the Paraguayan Exco member, who Triesman claimed in Parliament had demanded a knighthood from England’s 2018 bid.Fifa has now published a summary of Dingemans’ report on its website.Sports minister Hugh Robertson had expressed the British government’s displeasure at Fifa’s situation last week, calling for its presidential election to be suspended. But Blatter argued neither governments nor anyone outside the Fifa membership could have any bearing on the election process, and vowed to carry on unless Wednesday’s congress decided otherwise.“If somebody wants to change something in the election or in the congress of Wednesday, these are the members of Fifa,” he said.“This cannot be done by the executive committee, it cannot be done by any authorities outside of Fifa – it’s only the congress itself that can do it.“Congress will decide if I am a valid or non-valid candidate.”Blatter is expected to stand unopposed in an election marred by a torrent of dissent from within and beyond football’s world governing body. The only rival candidate to emerge – Mohamed Bin Hammam, president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) – pulled out having been suspended by Fifa’s own ethics committee over allegations that financial incentives were offered to Caribbean Football Union members.Fifa vice-president Jack Warner, himself also suspended on similar grounds, subsequently revealed an e-mail in which another high-ranking Fifa official, secretary general Jerome Valcke, suggested Bin Hammam had “bought” the 2022 World Cup finals for Qatar.Valcke has since attempted to clarify those remarks and Qatar 2022 itself issued a statement claiming that Valcke’s words had been “taken out of context” and its bid had been “dragged through the mud for absolutely no reason”.Blatter, however, took pains to avoid dealing with the detail of the various allegations as he faced reporters, saying only: “You should ask [Bin Hammam] why he pulled out. I was prepared to go into an election process with another candidate and then the congress would have decided. Now the situation has changed.”These arguments may now begin to damage the organisation’s commercial interests as, earlier on Monday, two of Fifa’s largest sponsors – Coca-Cola and Adidas – expressed concern at the widely publicised in-fighting. “The current allegations being raised are distressing and bad for the sport,” said a Coca-Cola spokesperson. “We have every expectation that Fifa will resolve this situation in an expedient and thorough manner.”An Adidas spokesman said: “The negative tenor of the public debate around Fifa at the moment is neither good for football nor for Fifa and its partners.”Though insistent that the election process and the Qatar World Cup 2022 bid had not been undermined by recent revelations, Blatter admitted Fifa’s reputation stands at a low ebb.“I have tried for years to make Fifa’s reputation the highest possible,” he said. “I regret what has happened in the last few days and weeks, [causing] great damage to the image of Fifa and a lot of disappointment for football fans.“When I entered Fifa 36 years ago, we had no problems. We had no problems until 1998, this was the so-called ‘very modest’ Fifa. Now we are a ‘comfortable’ Fifa. I think we are too comfortable and some people like that. “We are in a game and all the little devils can enter the game. We have to fight against these devils. We have started to fight.“We are in a very bad situation but, starting on Wednesday, the football family has the opportunity and they have to take it: if they want to restore the credibility of Fifa, and if they want to restore it with me.”As Blatter took to the podium in Zurich, Warner – one of the four members named by Triesman – issued his own statement welcoming the FA-commissioned inquiry which exonerated him.“Today, I regained some hope in the power of truth and transparency,” Warner’s statement read.“The report of the independent investigator on the allegations of Lord Triesman has proven once again that whenever the truth is told, people will always be able to have their names exonerated.” Meanwhile, a Conservative MP who sits on the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee has called for Wednesday’s Fifa election to be suspended and put forward his own agenda for the reform of the organisation.Damian Collins, the MP for Folkestone and Hythe, has worked with the ChangeFifa organisation to set out a five-point plan, inviting “parliamentarians and elected representatives from all the nations of the world to register their support”.Collins calls for the immediate suspension of the election and an independent inquiry followed by voting reform, increased transparency regarding decisions taken and Fifa finances, and limits to the number of terms Fifa members may serve as president or on the organisation’s executive committee.China’s Zhang Jilong has assumed temporary charge of the AFC in the wake of Bin Hammam’s suspension, while Lisle Austin of Barbados is to stand in for Warner as the president of Concacaf.Source: BBClast_img read more

Schmidt: I was not treated fairly

first_imgA former coach of Ghana’s Asante Kotoko, Hans Dieter Schmidt, has said he is bent on taking the €99,000 compensation ruled in his favour by the Court of Arbitration for Sports because the club did not treat him fairly. The world’s football governing body, Fifa, has directed that the Porcupine Warriors pay the coach within 30 days or risk being relegated to the lower division.“This is not an issue of sympathy for Kotoko even though I like them very much, but this is an issue with contract and legalities so after seven years this is justice I feel,” Schmidt told Storm FM.“They [Kotoko] must know their responsibility and that is what they have to follow now. I have been in contact with [George] Amoako, Dr. KK Sarpong and Larsen but the issue is beyond me, it is now with the highest body – Court of Arbitration for Sports.”The German added, “As to how they raise the money it is totally not my issue but the issue of law. I am just waiting for the money because I think I was not treated fairly at all.”Schmidt was sacked a year after he sent the Fabulous club to the final of the 2004 Caf Confederation Cup where they lost to rivals Hearts of Oak on home soil.last_img read more
